La Moye Golf Club

Our Sustainability Journey

La Moye Golf Club is fortunate to be routed through  Les Blanches Banques sand dune system which is at the heart of the Jersey National Park. The sand dunes among Europe’s most important and are designated as a site of special interest (SSI) because of their special zoological, botanical, archaeological and historical features.

• The club takes pride in the extensive work it undertakes each year to protect this unique habitat through long term sustainable golf course management practices, which have drawn acclaim from within the industry with several commendations from the Golf Environment Awards. The club regularly collaborates with the Jersey Government Environment Department,  Société Jersiaise and island based ecologists to undertake ecological works which further enhance the sand dune environment.

• The commitment to a sustainable ethos extends to the entire management of the club and is underpinned by becoming the first club in the Channel Islands to achieve Golf Environment Organisation certification in 2022. The verification process includes an independent assessment which provided reassurance of the continued commitment of La Moye Golf Club to manage and maintain the golf course and clubhouse with wider sustainability issues in mind.

Nature

La Moye is home to a vast array of Flora and Fauna with some rare and protected species on site.  The protection of our site is always at the forefront of our plans when managing day to day operations at the Club.

Our Strategy For Managing Energy Efficiency

We invest in, and implement, current best practice for energy reduction including use of the most efficient technologies.

  • Where possible, we collect grass clippings and other organic waste to re-use compost on the golf course.

  • Following the 2018 Clubhouse refurbishment energy efficient lighting and heating systems within the clubhouses were installed with further efficiencies through motion sensors and timers to minimise our energy consumption of non-renewables.

Responsible Water Use

La Moye recently installed a closed loop recycling unit whereby the water used for cleaning machinery is recycled and the petro-chemicals and grass clippings are filtered from the water. The washdown water is recycled every time it is used and therefore does not enter water bodies and risk polluting the surrounding areas with compounds that take a considerable time to break down into inert substances.

The site has 952 sprinkler heads which irrigate the course predominantly through our several boreholes on site. Irrigation is only applied to replace evapotranspiration to keep the turfgrasses alive and healthy.

Giving Back Through Golf

Throughout the year La Moye supports a number of local and national charities through our Charity Golf Days.  For each player on the day a donation of £50 per player is donated back to the organising charity.

  • The Club also choses an annual charity to support wherein all internal fundraising efforts are focussed on the Club Charity.

  • The Club charity for 2023 is Healing Waves a very worthy local charity. Healing Waves enables individuals despite their condition and/or disability both neurological and physical to access the ocean in a safe way to participate in water sport activities. This is so they can experience the therapeutic benefits that the ocean holds for us all.

Charities Supported Throughout 2022

Golf Environment Organisation - GEO

In line with the Club’s Strategy and Operating Plan we make our social economic governance responsibilities a priority in the daily operations of the Club. In keeping with this, as a Club we embarked on a journey to achieve formal certification from the Golf Environmental Organisation (GEO) in 2022.  Through becoming GEO Certified we have achieved the most widely regarded and credible sustainability distinction in golf.  The international certification was earned after successfully meeting the industry-standard best practices and demonstrating our commitment to make sustainability of central importance to our golf facility.  We're proud of our social and environmental value - and looking forward to doing even more on our sustainability journey.
